Funeral Poem

Waiting

You came to me today,
I’ve been waiting far too long,
Weeks ago you left me now,
Left me crying all night long.

You no longer show compassion,
Or the love burning in your soul,
Your flame of life put out,
You seem, no longer, whole.

My dear, why did you leave me?
I’ve been waiting far too long,
Months have passed since then,
Since the time when you were strong.

Do you not want me anymore?
Was it my own fault?
I never wanted to leave you there,
alone, in that cold, dead, vault.

You promised me you’d never go,
I’ve been waiting far too long,
A lifetime since I saw your face,
Without you, I don’t belong.

You sit high on the mantle,
Your name inscribed with gold,
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
A casket is nothing to behold.
